How to Choose the Right Meditation Bench Height
How to Choose the Right Meditation Bench Height
A practical guide to the 6-inch, 7-inch and 8-inch IKUKO® benches
How to choose the right meditation bench height
Choosing the right meditation bench height is essential for a comfortable, stable sitting position. A bench that is too low may require excessive knee and ankle flexion. A bench that is too high may feel less grounded or place too much weight on the seat.
Your height is a useful starting point, but it is not the only factor. Flexibility, body proportions, preferred position and meditation experience also matter.

These recommendations are a starting point. Two people of the same height may prefer different bench heights because their flexibility and leg proportions differ.
Why bench height matters
In seiza, the legs fold beneath the body and the pelvis rests on the bench. Raising the pelvis creates a more open angle between the thighs and torso. An appropriate height can help you find stability, reduce ankle compression, distribute weight more comfortably and stay focused on practice rather than position.
A well-fitted bench should not force you upright. It should create conditions in which the body can find a balanced posture.
Choose the low 6-inch model if…
· You are under approximately 5 ft 4 in / 162 cm.
· Your knees, hips and ankles flex comfortably.
· You are used to meditating close to the floor.
· You prefer a compact, grounded position.
· Deep leg flexion feels natural and stable.
The low model generally requires more mobility. If your joints become uncomfortable quickly, the standard height may suit you better even if you are shorter than 5 ft 4 in.
Choose the standard 7-inch model if…
· You are between approximately 5 ft 4 in and 6 ft.
· You are new to meditation benches.
· Your flexibility is average.
· You want a balance between a grounded position and leg room.
· You expect to use the bench for meditation and other floor-level activities.
The standard height is the most versatile starting point when no specific need points toward the low or high model.
Choose the high 8-inch model if…
· You are over approximately 6 ft / 180 cm.
· You have long legs.
· Your knees or ankles have limited flexibility.
· A lower bench feels cramped.
· You find it difficult to lower yourself toward the floor.
· You prefer a more open sitting angle.
A taller bench usually reduces the flexion required at the knees and ankles. It may, however, feel less grounded to a smaller or very flexible person.
Height is not the whole story
1. Flexibility
A flexible person may be comfortable on a lower bench. Someone of the same height with less mobility may prefer extra height.
2. Leg proportions
People of the same overall height can have very different leg lengths. Longer legs take up more space beneath the bench and may justify a taller model.
3. Preferred position
IKUKO® is primarily designed for kneeling or seiza sitting. The exact placement of the knees and feet can influence which height feels best.
4. Joint comfort
If you have sensitive knees, ankles, hips or back, do not choose solely by height. A slightly taller bench may create more room, but a meditation bench is not a therapeutic device. Seek professional advice for persistent pain or an existing injury.
How to check the fit
The height is likely appropriate when your pelvis rests near the center of the seat, your knees reach the floor without excessive strain, your ankles are not severely compressed, your weight feels evenly distributed and your spine can lengthen without force.
The bench may be too low if you feel trapped beneath the seat, your ankles are highly compressed, your pelvis rolls backward or standing up is unusually difficult. It may be too high if your knees cannot settle, nearly all your weight is on the seat or you feel perched and unstable.
What if you are between two sizes?
Choose the lower height if you are flexible, experienced with floor sitting and comfortable with deeper leg flexion. Choose the taller height if you are less flexible, have longer legs or want more room beneath the seat. A thin folded towel can temporarily simulate a slightly taller seat during testing.
Find your IKUKO® height
· Low, 6 in / 16 cm: smaller body size, good flexibility and a position close to the floor.
· Standard, 7 in / 18 cm: average body size, average flexibility and the most versatile choice.
· High, 8 in / 20 cm: taller body size, longer legs or more limited mobility.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular height?
The standard 7-inch / 18 cm model is the most versatile choice for many adults and a practical starting point for first-time users.
Can a shorter person choose the standard model?
Yes. A shorter person may prefer the standard height when flexibility is limited or more room is needed for the knees and ankles.
Can a taller person use the standard model?
Yes, particularly when the person is flexible and comfortable close to the floor. The high model usually offers more room.
Should I add a cushion?
IKUKO® is designed to be used without a cushion. A thin, stable cushion may temporarily add height or soften a pressure point.
Is an adjustment period normal?
Yes. Start with short sessions. Sharp, persistent or increasing pain should not be ignored.
